23395 SysAdmin - Live Television Streaming Service
Location: San Francisco, 94107
Our client is a small and ambitious San Francisco-based startup building the future of television. They're an underdog fighting for a seat at the table with the big cable providers. Their product lets you watch your favorite shows on all the devices you care about with intelligent search, insightful discovery, and effortless sharing. Their leadership consists of founding team members from Facebook and Meraki, and brings deep industry experience to the team. They re backed by NEA and industry partners including HBO, Discovery, AMC, A&E, Scripps, and Viacom.
Necessity is the mother of invention: our client was born in a Harvard dorm room, where cable TV wasn t offered and the over-the-air broadcast couldn t penetrate the walls of the 300-year-old brick residence halls. The founders wanted to watch TV around campus, so they wrapped their room in aluminum foil to boost the signal, and connected it to a server to stream it over the campus network.
Company and Culture: They re a small team that puts our product experience first. They foster a flexible work environment that is supportive but allows for autonomy so that everyone on the team can help build towards a common vision. Each team member owns what they build from start to finish. They ship to production multiple times per day and keep unnecessary process to a minimum so they can maintain a pace of rapid development. Our client values pragmatism, having pride in your work, and deep transparency at all levels.
We re looking for someone who will take over established processes for provisioning, configuration, operation, and maintenance of software and hardware, with the ability to identify and execute process improvements. This individual will assist with technical issues throughout existing systems and the deployment of new systems, and will contribute to and maintain system standards across all deployments.
Our client is language agnostic, but most of their codebase is written in Ruby, Golang, and Node, with C++ and Python sprinkled in. Their centralized infrastructure is built out using modern technology (continuous deployment, advanced monitoring).
Prepare system configurations for new systems, and update existing system configurations as required.
Perform daily system monitoring across all deployments to verify functionality of hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes.
Manage all network switches, ensuring correct configuration and troubleshooting issues with clients when necessary.
Repair or recover from hardware or software failures across systems.
Apply OS upgrades and patches, upgrade administrative tools and utilities, and configure new services as necessary.
Hacking on our monitoring and management system: our admins need to understand why the system is down and how to fix it. Do we need to dispatch a satellite tech? New hardware? Is there a power outage?
Write, test, ship, and maintain clean production code within a collaborative and version-controlled (git) codebase.
Review proposals created by Account Executives and Account Managers to provide necessary input and ensure technical accuracy.
Other duties and responsibilities as required.
Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Information Technology, engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent applicable experience.
Experience with git and familiarity with best practices.
A minimum of 2-4 years of experience as a System Engineer, Systems Administrator, Software Engineer, or equivalent role.
Project management experience.
Excellent organizational skills.
Advanced knowledge of Linux operating systems.
Above average knowledge of server hardware.
Advanced knowledge of networks and relevant technologies, including proxies, load balancers, LDAP, and firewalls.
Experience working in a codebase with multiple contributors.
Understanding of video streaming technologies.
Understanding of coaxial systems.
Prior experience working in IT in a higher education environment.
